Houston Support Group
The Houston area support group is held bi-monthly. On the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.

The group is an inspiration to many and is a way to seek therapy for no cost. My personal favorite aspect of the group is the opportunity you receive to meet others who are suffering with OCD as well.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in the Classroom:
Early Recognition and Effective Intervention

Aureen P. Wagner, Ph.D.
Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology, University of Rochester School of Medicine
Director, The Anxiety Wellness Center, Rochester, NY
Workshop Agenda

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a complex and baffling disorder that affects over one million school-aged youngsters. Many children with OCD experience serious problems at home and at school. With the right treatment, up to 80% of these youngsters can successfully manage their OCD. The sooner they are identified and treated, the sooner they can get back to the business of growing up, learning and "just being kids."

Dr. Aureen Wagner will discuss the unique issues and challenges that school professionals face in identifying and managing OCD in the classroom. Providing examples, Dr. Wagner will present the many ways in which OCD manifests at school, red flags and warning signs, age differences in expression of OCD, co-morbidity, and differential diagnosis (with ADHD, Tourette Syndrome, Asperger's). She will discuss how OCD can affect a child's academic and social functioning, and lead to "behavioral" problems at school and at home. Dr. Wagner will describe effective treatments and present child-friendly cognitive-behavioral strategies for managing OCD in school and in the classroom.

Specific topics covered included:

  • Different forms of OCD in youngsters
  • Differentiating OCD from tics and perseverations
  • How OCD manifests in school
  • Red flags for OCD in the classroom
  • Do's and don'ts of managing OCD
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Medications for OCD
  • What school personnel can do to help
  • Working effectively with parents
  • Feasible strategies at school
  • Handling meltdowns

Dr. Aureen Wagner is a Clinical Child Psychologist, Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Rochester, and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation. She is an expert on OCD and anxiety disorders and frequently presents seminars for parents, school and healthcare professionals. She is the author of several books including Up and Down the Worry Hill: A Children's Book about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and its Treatment, What to do when your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Strategies and Solutions, Treatment of OCD in Children and Adolescents: A Cognitive-behavioral Therapy Manual and Worried No More: Help and Hope for Anxious Children.
